Hey there! I’m Arttu Virolainen, an engineering student at Aalto University. I recently wrapped up my bachelor’s degree in Energy and Environmental Engineering and will be continuing my studies next autumn in the Master’s Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management.

This summer, I’ve been part of the Operations and Customers team at eSett. Alongside the usual responsibilities like customer service and imbalance settlement, I’ve had the chance to tackle some project-based tasks. For example, I’ve developed project planning and management frameworks, updated software testing cases, and even dabbled in data analytics and internal software testing.

Given the limited focus on electricity markets during my bachelor’s degree, my knowledge of the imbalance settlement model was pretty narrow. When I started, I had a steep learning curve ahead of me, which was overall made quite smooth by the well-planned and executed orientation.

When I started my summer at eSett, I was eager to learn about the electricity markets and imbalance settlement, as well as working as part of a very important but relatively small operator in terms of personnel numbers. I have been happy with my time at eSett since the company has exceeded my high expectations with meaningful work and an amazing team spirit! Plus, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well I’ve been able to blend my strengths and interests in project management with the Nordic electricity markets. Since this is my first internship in my field of study, I have learned a lot about teamwork, the electricity market, and problem-solving.

I wholeheartedly recommend the eSett summer trainee position! I’m excited to see what the future brings!

Hi! I am Johanna Järviluoto, a master student from Aalto University, studying in the Programme of Innovative Sustainable Energy Engineering, and majoring in energy systems. I have also completed a minor in computer science and my previous summer jobs have been within that area. This internship at eSett has been my first job in the energy sector, and it has made me even more excited about the field.

This summer I have taken part in various tasks, mostly related to energy and data. I have, among other things, developed reports, carried out small analysis tasks and taken part in the development of IT-tools. The tasks I have received have suited my background and interests very well. I feel that at eSett ensures that the summer interns get meaningful tasks that fit well with their interests and skills.

Before the summer I did not know much about imbalance settlement, but throughout the summer I have started getting grasp on it and learned about its significance to the whole Nordic electricity market. Working at eSett has proved to be a great chance to understand better how the Nordic electricity market works and what the current trends are affecting it. I have enjoyed working at eSett and felt that the atmosphere was welcoming, and I have always been offered help if I needed it.

The summer at eSett has shown me that the energy field has a lot to offer to me and combining my interests in energy and data is possible in it. Furthermore, I have learned a lot about the electricity market and imbalance settlement.

Hello there! My name is Iikka Huttu, an electrical engineering master student from Aalto University. I major in energy systems and markets. I am working my first summer at eSett in the Digital Office team.

Even though my background is in electricity systems and markets, the imbalance settlement process was not a subject I was too knowledgeable about. Since starting at eSett in early June, I have learned a lot about the Nordic imbalance settlement model and the operations and practices needed for running the day-to-day imbalance settlement services.

My tasks during the summer have been on the software side of eSett. eSett hosts publicly available data on our own Open Data-platform, where data can be accessed by different parties, from industry experts in energy markets to people interested in the historical balance of consumption and production in the Nordic market balance areas. Specifically, my tasks have been in developing automation testing tools for the service, giving software developers tools for testing new software releases more efficiently.

The summer has been very pleasant overall. My colleagues have been very welcoming, helpful, and instructive throughout the whole summer. When I faced an issue and needed guidance, people were always open to help and guide me toward the correct solution.

Overall, I would gladly recommend working at eSett. The summer has been full of interesting challenges and learning experiences that will be valuable in the future of my professional career.

All in all, we think that the orientation was comprehensive, well-planned, and gave a good insight into the operations of eSett. Even though we all share a fairly similar study background in energy technology, eSett has managed to provide us with quite different tasks based on our own interests and skill sets. The tasks have been diverse, and we’ve had the opportunity to express which ones interest us the most.

We feel that the working atmosphere at eSett has been welcoming, and we have gotten to know the whole eSett team well during the summer. Under the tight supervision of the crossword head-referee, even as summer trainees, we have had the honor of participating in the solving of coffee room crossword puzzles.

We would like to thank eSett for all the good memories and the lessons that will definitely benefit us in our future careers.
